SPEECH CONTEST ENGLISH ACTION DAYS 2011


Speech contest is one of the contests in English Action Day 2010.This contest is held to develop the Indonesian youth’s ability to express their idea about some recent issues through speaking. Through the contest, we expect that all the participants can improve their speaking skills.

Themes
Qualification Round:
  1. Youth’s view on the Indonesia’s decision to decline the seven wonders hosting event.
  2. Youth’s view on SBY’s cabinet reshuffle.
  3. Youth’s view on riots caused by religious discrimination.
  4. Youth’s view about becoming bilingual/ multilingual students.
  5. Youth’s view on Kebangkitan Nasional Day.

Speech Contest Rules:
1.      The participants of this speech contest are senior high school and vocational high school   students in DIY and central Java.
2.     The capacity of this speech contest participants are 30 students.
3.     Every school may appoint two students at the maximum to join speech contest.
4.     The speech contest is divided into two rounds. The qualification round and final round.
5.    The technical meeting will be held on May 8, 2011 at 7.30 a.m.
6.    The qualification round will be held on May 13, 2011 at 7.30 a.m.
7.    The final round will be held on May 14, 2011 at 7.30 a.m.
8.      The contestants will be divided into two groups; group A and group B which will be decided       on the technical meeting day.
9.    The contestants who belong to group A are not allowed to watch the performance of the     contestants in group B.
10.  Each contestant should choose one of four available themes for the qualification round.
11.    The contestants are allowed to use the speech outline, which has been approved by the committee, and are not allowed to use other outlines or papers when they perform their speech.
12.    The contestants have to write the outline on the outline paper which has been provided by     the committee at the Technical Meeting (this paper can be brought to school to prepare the outline notes).
13.   The contestants are expected to come 15 minutes before the contest begins.
14.   At the contest, each contestant’s name will be called only three times at most before performing. If the participant does not show up, he or she will be disqualified.
15.  Each contestant has 7 (seven) minutes minimum and 10 (ten) minutes maximum to present his or her speech.
16.  If the contestants take time more or less than the time limitation states above, the score will be reduced.
17.  The committee will give sign to the participant using flags:
a.    Green flag         : the contestant begins his or her speech.
b.   Yellow flag       : the speech has been performed for 7 (seven) minutes (minimum time).
c.    Red flag            : the time is up (maximum time).
18.  The final round is followed by 25% of the participants who have passed the qualification round.
19.  The contestants who have passed the qualification round should give a speech based on the theme that has been chosen by the committee for the final round which will be announced after the announcement of the finalist.
20.  During the contest, the other contestants and the audience are expected to keep silence.
21.  The applause can be given only at the beginning and the end of the speech.
22.  The contestants have to wear shoes. They are not allowed to wear sandals.
23.  The contestants are allowed to bring properties which can support their speech as long as these do not make the room dirty.
24.  The judges’ decisions are final.
Scoring Criterion:
1. Delivery
a.    Maintain eye contact with the audience throughout the room.
b.   Speak loudly and clearly.
c.    Use effective movements and gestures.
d.   Use outline notes effectively.
2. Communicative Ability
a.    Clear and correct pronunciation.
b.   Speak fluently and avoid too much hesitation or repetition.
c.    The accuracy of the grammar.
d.   Use appropriate and correct vocabulary or diction.
3. Organizing and Content
a.    Effective introduction.
b.   Logical development of ideas.
c.    Effective conclusion.
d.   Interesting and creative presentation.
e.    Keep the speech within the time limits.

Score Range: 50 - 100
Predicate        : Poor                : 50-59            
                         Fair                 : 60-69            
                         Good              : 70-79
                         Very Good     : 80-89
                         Excellent         : 90-100

Contribution of speech
Each participant should pay Rp 50,000 as a registration payment.
Prize:
1.      1st winner       :  A trophy, Rp 650,000,  and certificate
2.      2nd winner      :  A trophy, Rp 500,000, and certificate
3.      3rd winner       :  A trophy, Rp 350,000, and certificate
