STORY TELLING CONTEST ENGLISH ACTION DAYS 2011


            Story Telling is one of the contests in English Action Day 2011. This contest is held to develop all participants’ ability in revealing their creativity and expression through telling a story using English Language. Through the contest, we expect that all the participants can improve their speaking skills in English Language.

A.    Definition of Story Telling Competition
v  Storytelling is the art of using language, vocalization, and/or physical movement and gesture to reveal the elements and images of a story to a specific, live audience. A central, unique aspect of storytelling is its reliance on the audience to develop specific visual imagery and detail to complete and co-create the story.
v  Story Telling Competition is a competition in which participants using their abilities to use language, vocalization, and physical movement and gesture to reveal or interpret the elements and images of a story to a specific, live audience, so the audience can have a visual imagery and detail to complete and co-create the story.

B.     Theme
v  Theme for Qualification Round
1.      Qualification Round will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011.
2.      The Theme of Qualification Round is “Make Your Own Fairy Tale”.
3.      Participants are expected to make a fairy tale based on their creativity.
4.      Fairy Tale itself is a story that tells about an individual who confronts strange or magical events. The plot is usually about a conflict between good and evil with magic and luck and usually ended by happy ending.
5.      Participants are also expected to give a moral value on the story they have made.
v  Theme for Final Round
1.      Final Round will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011.
2.      The Theme of Final Round is “Original English Folklore”.
3.      The text of The original English Folklores will be given on the Technical Meeting on May 8, 2011 at 07.30 a.m.
4.      Here are the stories list:
a.       Bloody Mary
b.      The Billy Goat and The King
c.       Pied Piper of Hamelin
d.      Jack and The Beanstalk.

C.    Rules about Story Telling Competition
  1. Each participants must come to Technical Meeting on May 8, 2011 at 7.30 a.m.
  2. The capacity of this Story Telling Contest participants are 40 students. Every school may appoint 2 students at the maximum to join The Story Telling Contest
  3. Each participant must come at least  15 minutes before the competition begins.
  4. Each participant must stay at the competition venue until the competition ends and must remain silent when another participant is delivering his/her story, unless by any of the committee’s permission.
  5. Every communication device must be silent or turned off.
  6. Participants’ attendants may video and photograph of their participant’s performance, as long as they do not disturb the other participants when delivering their story. Please be aware that the attendants may not be on the stage during the performance.
  7. The applause can be given only at the beginning and at the end of story.
  8. None of the participants is allowed to read any story text or keynote when delivering the story.
  9. Each participant will be called three times in a row based on his/her turn (first chance).
  10. All participants will be divided into two groups, Group A and Group B. Each group consists of 20 participants. In the first round, Group A  presents their story-telling first, then Group B presents theirs in the second round.
  11. Participants who do not come up after being called three times (first chance) will be put on the last turn (second chance).
  12. Participants who do not come on the second chance will be disqualified.
  13. Participants may opt to use actions, props or costumes, at their own expense, to help to bring their stories to life.
  14. The committee will give sign to the participant by using flags:
a. Green flag  : the participant begins his/her story-telling. (5-7 minutes)
b. Yellow flag : the story-telling has been performed for 5 minutes (minimum time).
c. Red flag      : the time is up (7 minutes = maximum time).
  1. 15 seconds will be given as a tolerance time right after the 7th minute. If the story has not been finished yet, the committee will give 5 knocks as a sign that the time is over.
  2. The tolerance time will be a consideration for score lessening. Thus every second past the tolerance time will reduce the score.
  3. The score margin is between 0 - 100.
  4. The judges' decision is final and no correspondence pertaining to the judging process will be entertained.

D.    Scoring Criteria
a. Contents (Story is delivered in logical order and it is appropriate to the theme)
b. Pronounciation (Articulation and Intonation)
c. Fluency (Speed, Voice Quality, Voice Expression)
d. Performance (confidence, gesture, mimic)
e. Creativity (Related to the use of properties in order to bring the story alive)
f. Time Management
*The Maximum Point for each criteria is 4 and The Minimum Point for each criteria is 1.
*Final score is Total Point x 5.

E.     Additional Information
v  Contribution of Story Telling
Each participant should pay Rp 50.000,00 as a registration payment.

v   1st winner                        : A trophy, Rp 650,000,  and certificate
v  2nd winner                        : A trophy, Rp 500,000, and certificate
v  3rd winner             : A trophy, Rp 350,000, and certificate
